General description

OEOS 800The Opto Electronic Object Scanner, in short “OEOS”, is a measuring system that is able to take shadow images of opaque (impervious to light) objects.
By using parallel laser beams, the reciever is able to generate scans where a resolution of 64 µm in measurement field height is achieved. The resolution in movement direction depends on the movement speed (see principle of measurement) and can be up to 64 µm. Therefore it is possible to measure and digitalize plants (or any other object).
Even very fine structures like tiny hair on a plant stem or awns can be detected with a high resolution.

 

Principle of measurement

When an opaque object passes through the parallel laser beams, the shadow of that object is detected by the receiver. The measurement data is send with a frequency up to 4000 Hz via Ethernet to a processing unit (e.g. a PC). There, the data is visualized, analyzed and stored by the iotec data processing software. The software creates an endless recording of the measurement data that can be stored as binary images.

Systemintegration

The OEOS system can be integrated into existing installations. Therefore, a variety of interfaces can be accessed (e.g. Ethercat, USB, …). With the iotec data processing software, it is possible to link additional sensors to the OEOS sensor. For example:
   - Rotary encoder, to determine the resolution in movement direction
   - Start/Stop trigger, for automated starting and stopping of an OEOS measurement
   - SLR camera, to take an additional image of the passing object
   - ...

Length options

Depending on the application, different height of measurement fields are required. At the beginning, iotec offers three standard sizes:
1. Effective measurement field height of 98 mm (OEOS-01-98)
2. Effective measurement field height of 368 mm (OEOS-04-368)
3. Effective measurement field height of 818 mm (OEOS-09-818)
(Note: Intermediate sizes up to 2078 mm are produced on request. Custom models and sizes excess lengths are also possible on request.)
 

 

Fields of application

The OEOS sensor can be used in different fields of application. In the field of plant breeding it is very important to be able to measure the plant characteristics. With the help of high resolution shadow images it is possible to use algorithms to determine plant parameters. For example:
  - Height & width of a plant
  - Leaf count
  - Awns or leaf length
  - …
For phenotyping tasks, the OEOS sensor can be used indoor (like in greenhouses) or outdoor*.
(*For outdoor applications, a carrier platform is needed)

The OEOS sensor can also be used for industrial applications like automation or quality inspection.
 

 

Advantages OEOS vs. camera

The OEOS sensor takes sharp pictures over the whole measurement distance. A conventional camera is limited to one depth of focus.
Since the OEOS sensor needs no lenses, lens aberration are no problem!
The OEOS sensor can be used in different lightning conditions. An active lightning, even in absolute darkness, is not needed.
Only the object that passes through the sensor is recorded. When using a conventional camera, unwanted objects in the detection range or an unsuitable background complicate the image processing.
Because of the high resolution, objects can be recorded with up to 1 Giga pixel (with an image size of 2m x 2m).
